Mom and I drove to Point Reyes last weekend to meet up with Sarah and Alexandra at Point Reyes for a lovely jaunt. It was a 10 mile round trip that trekked through beach tundra down a peninsula that was sandwiched between the Pacific Ocean and the Bay. Sarah was one of Mom's classmates and Alex is her daughter who is starting her last year of nursing school at San Fransisco.

The peninsula is home to a 500 strong herd of Elk and we would see groups of the quadrupeds lounging in the dry grass. They kept their distance so without the telephoto lens, the pictures of them don't do the scene justice. The landscape was speckled with fragrant yellow flowering shrubs, rolling fog thick enough to cut, twisted pines and eucalyptus, and roaming flocks of Pelican and sea lions.

We didnt exactly rough it for lunch; consisting of fresh rosemary bread (early morning baking seems to be a tradition now), cheeses, fruits, veggies, hummus, olives, wine, and green tea creme brulee. I even brought the torch to caramelize the sugar. Best hiking lunch I've had in a long time.

The fog lifted on our trek back and neither Mom nor Sarah (also a photographer) could resist an awkwardly posed photo shoot at the historical stables before we left.

The next day, we went wine tasting in Sonoma, jumped aboard cave tour groups, and tried our hand at several wineries. The tasting rooms where large and ornate, quite the contrast to the humble rooms of the Lodi wineries. Alex and I managed to squeeze in a showing of "Bruno," which Mom wanted to see with me. Overall decent movie, but I'm glad Mom wasnt there, as its not quite the movie you want to watch with your mother.

Hey Ben!
You're becoming quite the author with your lovely descriptions of weekend jaunts.....I'm very jealous of the good times you're having. The picnic lunch at Point Reyes was something I would have definitely hiked 10 miles for, bum knee and all. Sounds like you're having some great summer fun before going back to the grind of school. Keep having a good time! Love, AK
